Royal Palace

Royal Palace (Place des Alaouites, Fez) – located 3 hours (290 km) east of Casablanca), the most imposing of all Fez monuments is undoubtedly the Royal Palace, which began construction in the 13th century. From Place des Alaouites, a vast esplanade created nearby in 1968, you can enjoy impressive views of the palace’s delicately worked doorways. The doors are bronze, but they shine like gold. It was once used as a residence to the sultan, his guards and servants as well as a place where the central government met to conduct business. Visitors must check with the Palace, though, on whether it’s open (since it’s often closed to the public – with the King of Morocco still using the Palace whenever he’s in Fez).
